Dinesh D’Souza has written a douzer. In a recent column for the Christian Science Monitor, D’Souza uses the thought of Immanuel Kant to rebut the claims of modern atheists (Daniel Dennett, Chris Hitchens, Dawkins, etc.).
I ended up having to read this article twice. When I studied philosophy under an evangelical professor, I was taught that Kant was the enemy. This professor once gave my class a comprehensive handout rebutting Kant. He used to say, “when you guys are down at Wycliffe College studying for your M.Div’s, show your professors this!”
So, what the hell is D’Souza doing?
D’Souza believes that Kant’s thought opens the door to faith. Why? Because Kant’s work has shown that the empirical world isn’t all that there is. Reason does have to remain within its limits, does it not? We only have access to the appearance of reality. This is what science and reason can examine. As for reality itself? Not so much.
This is the solution?
This sounds like curing AIDs with syphillis to me.
D’Souza writes that when he has used Kant on a modern atheist like Daniel Dannett and asked them to rebut Kant, they haven’t. Why? “There are no such refutations.”
Wow. Talk about a ballsy claim. Let’s examine that … tomorrow.

Hmmm, I wonder if these problems with D’Souza’s reasoning apply to anyone else we know?

Pingback by KANT AGAIN « The Brooks November 24, 2007 @ 10:41 pmHave you ever watched D’Souza debate? He’s quick and knows a lot of historical facts, but I don’t think he’s actually a useful apologist.
Comment by Ian Clary February 6, 2008 @ 12:36 amI watched his debate with Hitchens and actually preferred Hitchens!
